Short answer
ConfirmedNo. Grand Theft Auto VI ships on 19 November 2026 as a single-player game with no online or multiplayer mode. Rockstar Games describes it as a "single-player experience" in its own pre-order announcement, and the PlayStation Store listing carries no multiplayer feature tags. The free GTA+ month, which comes with a digital pre-order of either edition, is access to the existing GTA+ service — GTA Online and classic Rockstar titles — not to anything inside GTA 6.
That second sentence is the one costing people money, so it gets its own section below.
GTA 6 is single-player at launch
This is confirmed, from the source, and not an inference from silence.
Rockstar's own pre-order announcement describes the product as a single-player experience. Separately, the PlayStation Store listing carries no multiplayer, co-op or online feature tags — and storefront feature tags are not optional decoration, they are how a platform holder describes what a product does.
The Xbox listing says the same thing independently. Its capability data contains exactly two entries: single player, and optimised for Xbox Series X|S. Nothing else. Two platform holders, working from separate submissions by the publisher, both declaring a single-player product, is about as strong as pre-release evidence gets.
So:
| At launch | |
|---|---|
| Single-player campaign | Yes |
| Online mode | No |
| Co-operative play | No |
| Competitive multiplayer | No |
| Player-versus-player | No |
If you are buying Grand Theft Auto VI to play with friends on 19 November, you are buying the wrong thing. That is a blunt sentence and it is meant to be — this is the single most consequential misunderstanding around this release.

The GTA+ month is not a GTA 6 subscription
Two things get misread about the free month of GTA+, and the second one is more expensive than the first.
What it is attached to. It is a digital pre-order bonus, on both editions. Take-Two's press release is explicit: all pre-orders and purchases before 20 November 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, "alongside a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders". Rockstar's edition comparison badges it as a pre-order bonus and flags it as included with Standard and Ultimate alike. It is not an Ultimate perk, and a good deal of coverage — including an earlier version of this page — has it as one.
What it unlocks. A very large number of people are reading it as "a month of GTA 6 online". It is not that either.
Put the two together and the buying decision comes out somewhere specific. The GTA+ month is not in the $20 gap between Standard and Ultimate at all — pre-order Standard digitally and you get exactly the same month. So if you were weighing the tiers partly on "and Ultimate comes with online", neither half of that sentence holds: the month is on both editions, and it is not online for this game. Judge the month on its own terms instead, as what a month of GTA+ is worth to someone who wants to play GTA Online and the classic catalogue — real value for some people, zero for others, and unrelated to which tier you buy.
The editions comparison breaks down what genuinely is in the gap, including one item that matters more than the cosmetics: Rockstar flags the Classic Car Collection as Ultimate content. Worth knowing while you are deciding: the Vintage Vice City Pack comes with any purchase made before 20 November 2026, not just pre-orders, so that particular bonus is not a reason to rush — but the GTA+ month is pre-order-only and digital-only, so that one is. The pre-order guide covers the rest of the timing.
The storefront does declare in-game purchases
One detail that sits oddly beside all of the above, and that we have not seen covered anywhere: every regional PlayStation listing for Grand Theft Auto VI carries the standard in-game purchases notice, rendered as "In-game purchases optional".
That is a platform-holder declaration, submitted by the publisher, on a game with no announced online mode. What it refers to has not been stated. It could mean nothing more than the Ultimate Edition Upgrade being purchasable from inside the product, which would be mundane. It could mean something else. Rockstar has published nothing about monetisation inside Grand Theft Auto VI beyond the two edition tiers.
We are not going to build a theory on one storefront flag. But a single-player game declaring optional in-game purchases is a real, checkable data point, and it belongs on a page that spends this much time on what the game does and does not charge for.
Will there be a GTA 6 Online?
Nothing has been announced. Not a name, not a window, not a confirmation that such a product exists in development, and no statement on whether it would be free, bundled or separately priced.
That is a genuine, complete absence of information, and it is worth separating from the two things people mistake for information.
A "December 2026" multiplayer window attributed to a leaker has circulated widely. It is unverified — it traces to a single unnamed source rather than to Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. Insider Gaming's write-up covers where the claim came from. Reported Treat it as a claim about what someone said, not a date.
Historical precedent is real but is not a forecast:
| Title | Base game | Online component | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | 17 September 2013 | GTA Online, 1 October 2013 | ~2 weeks |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 26 October 2018 | Red Dead Online beta, November 2018 | ~1 month |
Those two rows are confirmed history. They tell you that Rockstar has previously shipped online components shortly after a base game, twice. They do not tell you that it will happen again, on what schedule, or in what form. GTA Online has now run for over a decade and is a live business in its own right, which is a materially different situation from 2013 — the studio has an existing, profitable online product, and how that affects the timing of a successor is not something anyone outside Rockstar knows.

We are not converting two data points into a prediction. If an online component is announced, it will be announced clearly, by Rockstar, and it will not be ambiguous.
What happens to GTA Online?
Nothing announced. GTA Online continues to be the online mode of Grand Theft Auto V, it continues to run, and Rockstar has said nothing about shutting it down, migrating it, or connecting it to Grand Theft Auto VI in any way.
This is the reverse of the question most people ask, and it is worth stating because the two games are separate products with separate progression. Your GTA Online character, property, vehicles and money belong to Grand Theft Auto V. There is no announced mechanism for carrying any of it into Grand Theft Auto VI, and with no online mode in the new game there is nowhere for it to go.
If you subscribe to GTA+ today, that subscription continues to do exactly what it does today. Buying Grand Theft Auto VI changes none of it.
Do I need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core?
Console subscriptions are generally required for online multiplayer and not for single-player games. Grand Theft Auto VI has no online mode at launch, so on that basis single-player play should not require one.
Rockstar has not published a specific subscription requirement, so if you rely on this — for example you have let a subscription lapse and are deciding whether to renew for launch week — check the storefront listing directly closer to release. It will state any requirement.
Separately, and often confused with the above: the game is not on Game Pass or PS Plus as a catalogue title, and no subscription release has been announced for either. Take-Two has never said anything about this specific game on the subject. The platforms page covers the sourcing in detail.
What this means for how you will actually play
A single-player launch changes the shape of the first weeks in a way worth planning for.
There is no shared world, no session, no friend waiting for you. Completion is a solo activity, run at your own pace, against a checklist you keep yourself. And because this is a console-only release, you cannot alt-tab to a wiki mid-mission — the map and the checklist have to live on a second screen.
That is what the interactive map and the collectibles tracker are being built for: one thumb, a phone, a dark room, a paused game. Progress is stored on your device, no account required. If you want the broader picture of what 100% is likely to involve, we have written that up, with everything speculative labelled as such until the game is out and the real data exists.
When we will know more
Take-Two's Q1 FY2027 earnings call on 7 August 2026 is the next scheduled moment when new official information could surface. Online strategy for the biggest release in the company's history is a plausible earnings-call topic, though not a guaranteed one.
Beyond that, the countdown page tracks the dates that exist, and this page will be updated if and when Rockstar says anything about multiplayer. Until then the answer is the one at the top: single-player, no online, and the GTA+ month belongs to a different game.
