Short answer

Confirmed

Pre-load for Grand Theft Auto VI opens on 12 November 2026, seven days before the 19 November release, for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The download size has never been published by Rockstar Games and does not appear on either storefront. Every size figure in circulation is an estimate.

Two questions get asked together and have very different answers. The pre-load date is settled and came from Rockstar directly. The download size is not settled, and nobody outside Rockstar and the platform holders knows it yet. This page keeps them separate so you do not plan your storage around a number somebody invented.

Your no-rush pre-load plan

Four useful actions, timed so you never need to make a storage decision from a rumour.

  1. Now

    Ignore every file-size claim

No official size exists. Do not delete games or buy an expansion drive because a search result says 150 GB, 250 GB or 320 GB.

  2. Early November

    Check your console's store listing

The PlayStation and Xbox product pages are the source that matters. Once your storefront shows an install size, use that figure for your console rather than a cross-platform estimate.

  3. 11 November

    Prepare the console overnight

Make enough room, enable automatic downloads and leave the console connected. There is no benefit to waiting up for an unannounced unlock hour.

  4. 12 November

    Confirm the download has started

Check the queue once. If pre-load opens later in the day, you still have six full days before release.

When does GTA 6 pre-load start?

12 November 2026. Rockstar Games gave the date in the pre-order announcement published when pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026.

Pre-orders opened25 June 2026
Physical copies ship from12 November 2026
Pre-load opens12 November 2026

Seven days is a generous window by current standards, and it exists for a reason: this is a console-only launch with no PC version, which means every single player is pulling the same build from the same two storefronts inside the same short period. A week of staggered downloading is how that gets absorbed.

The countdown page tracks both dates.

What time does pre-load unlock?

Unknown. Rockstar has not stated a time.

The practical version: set the console to download automatically in rest mode on the evening of 11 November and let it resolve itself. If the queue opens at midnight you will wake up to a finished download. If it opens later in the day you have still lost nothing, because you have six more days.

Do I need to have pre-ordered?

Yes, in the sense that the game has to be attached to your account before you can download anything. That happens two ways.

  • Digital pre-order. Standard at $79.99 or Ultimate at $99.99. The entitlement lands on your account immediately and pre-load begins on 12 November. Our pre-order guide covers what each tier includes, and the editions comparison covers whether the upgrade is worth it.
  • Physical boxed copy. These ship from 12 November 2026 rather than launch day, and Rockstar has said explicitly that the timing exists so the enclosed download code can be redeemed for pre-load.

That second point deserves emphasis, because it is unusual.

The physical edition is a code in a box

There is no disc. The boxed edition of Grand Theft Auto VI contains a download code and nothing readable by your console's drive. This is confirmed, not inferred, and it changes what "physical" means for this release:

  • You download the full game either way. There is no partial install from disc.
  • The box is not a backup. If your account loses the entitlement, the box does not help you.
  • A shipping delay is a play delay. A disc that arrives on 19 November still works on 19 November; a code that arrives on 21 November does not.

We wrote that up separately in why GTA 6 has no disc. If you have not bought yet and you care about starting on time, the digital version is the lower-variance option purely on logistics.

How big is the download?

Nobody outside Rockstar and the platform holders knows.

There is no figure on the PlayStation Store product page, no figure on the Xbox listing, and no statement from Rockstar Games. That is not an oversight — storefront size fields are typically populated in the weeks before release once the shipping build is locked, and this one has not been populated yet.

Everything you have seen quoted falls into one of two buckets:

FigureStatusWhere it comes from
150–200 GB base installUnverified estimateExtrapolation from other large open-world console releases
200–250 GB including a day-one patchUnverified estimateThe same extrapolation, plus assumed patch overhead
320 GBUnsourced speculationSportskeeda's own rumour piece, which labels itself a rumour

None of these came from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. We are listing them so you can recognise them when they are quoted at you as fact, not so you can plan around them.

What we can say about storage

These are platform facts rather than GTA 6 facts, and they hold regardless of what the final size turns out to be.

  • PS5 ships with an 825 GB SSD; the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro carry larger drives. Usable space is meaningfully lower than the headline figure once system files are accounted for.
  • Xbox Series X ships with a 1 TB SSD, and the Series S with 512 GB. Same caveat on usable space.
  • Both consoles support expansion. PS5 takes a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD. Xbox Series consoles take a storage expansion card. Both let you move installed games between internal and expanded storage.

If you are going to expand, do it in October. Fitting an M.2 drive into a PS5 is a fifteen-minute job when you are calm and a miserable one at 23:00 on 18 November.

When will we actually know the size?

Two triggers, in order of likelihood.

  1. The storefront listings populate. This is the one that will actually answer the question, and it typically happens somewhere between the pre-load date and a few weeks before it. Once the PlayStation or Xbox page shows a size, that is the number.
  2. Take-Two's Q1 FY2027 earnings call on 7 August 2026. Unlikely to mention install size — earnings calls discuss revenue, not gigabytes — but it is the next scheduled moment when any new official information about the game is due.

We will update this page when the storefronts publish a figure, and the confidence label at the top will change with it.

While you wait

The map, the collectible checklists and the completion tracker are being built now so they are finished before the data exists to fill them. You can see the shape of it on the interactive map and the collectibles tracker, both currently carrying pre-launch placeholder data with confidence labels attached. If you want the broader picture of what 100% completion is likely to involve, we have written that up too.

Everything on the GTA 6 hub that is not yet confirmed is labelled as such. That is the whole editorial policy, and this page is the clearest example of why it matters: the pre-load date is a fact, the download size is not, and pages that present both in the same confident tone are lying to you about one of them.

Common questions

When can I pre-load GTA 6?
Pre-load for Grand Theft Auto VI opens on 12 November 2026, seven days before the 19 November 2026 release, for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games confirmed the date in its pre-order press release. No specific unlock time of day has been announced.
How big is the GTA 6 download?
No official download size has been published. It does not appear on the PlayStation Store or Xbox listing, and Rockstar Games has never stated one. Every figure circulating online is an estimate rather than a confirmed number. Storefront listings normally publish a size in the weeks before release, so check the store page closer to launch.
What time does GTA 6 pre-load unlock?
Rockstar Games has not announced a pre-load unlock time. Coverage suggesting midnight local time on 12 November 2026 is an inference from how the PlayStation and Xbox stores usually behave, not a statement from Rockstar. Treat any specific hour as unconfirmed until the storefronts show a countdown.
Do I need to pre-order to pre-load GTA 6?
Yes. Pre-loading requires the game to already be attached to your account, which means a digital pre-order placed before 12 November 2026. Buying at launch means downloading at launch. Physical boxed copies also work, because they contain a download code that can be redeemed for pre-load from 12 November.
Does the physical GTA 6 disc need a download?
There is no disc. The boxed edition of Grand Theft Auto VI contains a download code rather than game media, so the entire game is downloaded regardless of which version you buy. Boxes ship from 12 November 2026 specifically so the code can be redeemed in time for pre-load.
How much free space should I leave for GTA 6?
No official requirement has been published, so any specific number is guesswork. The practical approach is to check the storefront listing once it shows a size, then leave headroom above it for a day-one patch, since patches are usually downloaded alongside rather than in place of the base install.
Is GTA 6 320 GB?
No source supports that figure. It originated in speculative coverage and has never been confirmed by Rockstar Games, Sony or Microsoft, and it does not appear on any storefront listing. Treat it, and every other circulating number, as unverified until a store page publishes a size.
Can I install GTA 6 on an external drive?
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support storage expansion, and both allow games to be moved between internal and expanded storage. Current-generation games generally need to run from internal or officially supported expansion storage rather than a standard USB drive. Check your console storage settings before launch week rather than during it.
